Woodwind In The Woods

June 1st – 4:30 – 6:30 Eastern

A concert with Grandmaster of the Shakuhachi flute:
Cornelius Boots
zenshakuhachi.com

Wood Prophet and root philosopher Cornelius Boots has performed in most types of ensembles, at international festivals and up-close for goats with big horns. Boots has written, recorded, and released over a dozen albums of his original compositions and teaches his signature playing style to the curious and dedicated around the world.

Forging his own no-holds-barred style as a professional woodwind performer/composer/teacher since 1989, he is a three-time graduate of Jacobs School of Music (BM Classical Clarinet ’97, BS Audio Recording ’97, MM Jazz Studies ’99) and licensed grandmaster (dai shihan) in the dynamic Zen shakuhachi lineage of Watazumido. The 1996 inventor of the bass clarinet quartet – now a popular modality in many colleges and communities – Boots is a sought-after composer, performer, and teacher, and is an active recording artist who has won awards and created fresh new repertoire for both bass clarinet and shakuhachi, reshaping the landscape of modern woodwind performance practice through robust expressive, signature techniques rooted in pan-stylistic depth and artistic evolution.

After a 30-year career of high-caliber jazz, classical, rock, and experimental music activities (on multiple woodwinds with a focus on the bass clarinet), Boots has now positioned himself at the crossroads of personal expression and divine revelation, exclusively playing bamboo shakuhachi (jinashi/hotchiku) and its baritone brother, Taimu. He is the founder of Black Earth Shakuhachi School, and composes music for the Wood Prophets, the world’s first bass shakuhachi group.

View Our Space

The Pavilion

Walden Peak Farm is an old 22 acre homestead atop Walden’s Ridge on the back of Signal Mountain. Handcrafted from the land, our 44×33 timber-frame pavilion provides a central gathering spot for your events equipped with two large private bathrooms with vanities and mirrors. Nestled behind an old family farmhouse, the pavilion is steps away from gardens and orchards. We grow a variety of perennial and annual flowers which provide a show of continuous blooms from spring to fall.

The Gardens

Just a short walk from the pavilion there are several gardens and orchards to explore. We grow a variety of perennial and annual flowers which provide a show of continuous blooms from spring to fall. Our herb and garden beds look more like flower beds from a distance! Patches of poppies popping in the spring, peonies busting blooms around mothers day, and coneflowers swaying in the breeze throughout the year. Yellow and pink yarrows are enchanting. Colorful gladiolas parade in show to our delight, and the sunflowers dazzle in the light. Bachelor buttons, coreopsis, zinnia’s and cosmos everywhere. Swamp Hibiscus, spearmint, passionflowers, and many more blooming things to enjoy- such as…. blackberries, blueberries, apples, pears and grapes, oh my!

The Farmhouse

The rustic 1908 farmhouse is provided Medium to large events. Used as a place of refuge, staging/storage, or just preparing for the special moments ahead. Two bathrooms are located in the pavilion, adjacent to the back of the farmhouse.

The Woods

Our woods venue is directly across the backfield from the pavilion. It is in a natural clearing, nestled in a grove of mature white oak trees, located next to springhead. The natural depression in the earth forms a bowl around this spot, highlighting this event location.
